ECG to begin transformer upgrade in Accra amid planned outages

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will begin replacing and upgrading transformers in parts of Accra from April 8, causing brief planned outages.
The announcement was contained in a press release signed by Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, Acting Director of Communications of the power distributor.
According to the statement, the exercise has received approval from the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, and forms part of efforts to improve electricity supply nationwide.
ECG indicated that the project will involve the replacement and upgrade of twelve transformers across six primary substations located in Adenta, La, Teshie-Nungua, Nmai-Dzor, Baatsona and Lashibi.
The upgrades will increase transformer capacity from 20/26 MVA to 30/39 MVA.
“This intervention forms part of ongoing efforts to enhance the reliability, stability, and capacity of electricity supply across the country,” the statement said.
The company noted that the increased capacity would “significantly improve load-handling capability and reduce system overloads in these fast-growing communities.”
The first phase of the exercise is scheduled to run from Wednesday, April 8 to Friday, April 10, 2026.
ECG cautioned that the works would require “brief planned power outages in the affected areas” to ensure safety and allow for successful execution of the project.
A detailed schedule outlining affected communities, outage periods and duration has been prepared and will be shared through the company’s official communication channels.
The statement assured customers that “every effort will be made to minimise the duration and impact of these outages,” urging residents and businesses to plan accordingly.
ECG described the upgrade programme as “a critical step toward strengthening infrastructure, improving system resilience, and delivering a more reliable and efficient electricity service.”
The company also appealed for public cooperation, noting that the improvements are essential to meeting growing energy demands in Accra.
