GTEC publishes list of 62 unrecognized tertiary institutions

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has released a list of 62 unrecognised tertiary institutions, warning the public to verify certificates issued by them.

The statement, signed by the Commission, said the affected institutions are not recognised due to “various quality assurance concerns,” urging prospective students and employers to exercise caution in dealing with them.

According to GTEC, the publication forms part of its regulatory mandate to maintain standards and protect the integrity of Ghana’s tertiary education system.

The Commission stressed that qualifications obtained from these institutions may not be valid for academic progression or employment within the country.

Among the institutions listed are Universidad Azteca (Mexico), Atlantic International University (USA), Monarch Business School (Switzerland), and Texila American University (Guyana). Several Ghana-based entities, including Debest College of Science, Arts and Business, Faith University Seminary, Doxa Open University, and Quest International University, were also named.

The list further includes institutions operating across multiple jurisdictions such as London Academy of Technology and Management (UK), Swiss Management Centre University (Switzerland), and Dublin Metropolitan University (UK/Cyprus), raising concerns about cross-border accreditation claims.

GTEC cautioned that some of these institutions may operate online or through affiliate centres, making it difficult for unsuspecting students to verify their legitimacy.

It therefore advised the public to consult the Commission directly or check its official platforms before enrolling in any tertiary programme.

“The general public is advised to exercise due diligence with regard to any certificates issued by these institutions,” the statement emphasised, noting that recognition status is critical in determining the credibility of academic qualifications.
