Mahama breaks ground for 1,067 housing units in Ashanti region

President John Dramani Mahama has launched the Green City Project at Dedesua in the Ashanti Region to help address Ghana’s housing shortage and improve access to affordable homes.
The Green City Project, which covers about 200 acres of land, will deliver 1,067 residential units designed to provide affordable accommodation for citizens.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony on Saturday, May 9, President Mahama described Ghana’s housing deficit, estimated at over 1.5 million units, as a serious national problem that requires urgent action.
The project is expected to provide affordable homes for many Ghanaians struggling to access decent housing.
He said years of poor planning, rising land costs, expensive building materials and limited access to long-term financing have contributed to the crisis.
According to him, many Ghanaians continue to live in poor housing conditions, a situation he warned could worsen if practical measures are not taken. Hence major housing initiative aimed at reducing Ghana’s growing housing deficit.
“A nation that is seeking development must house its people with dignity. We are therefore implementing a comprehensive housing agenda that addresses supply, improves affordability, strengthens tenant protection, and reforms housing finance to reflect the reality of Ghanaian incomes,” he stated.
The initiative forms part of government efforts to improve access to housing, especially for low- and middle-income earners.
He stressed that his administration remains committed to ensuring more Ghanaians have access to decent and affordable housing.
“Better housing conditions can improve public health, support education, boost productivity, and create more stable communities,” he emphasized.
President Mahama further revealed that the government is prioritising the completion of the stalled Saglemi Housing Project while also rolling out social housing programmes in districts across the country.
He said the move is aimed at making home ownership easier and more accessible for ordinary Ghanaians.
