Abronye’s continued detention embarrassing to Judiciary – Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin says the continued detention of Kwame Baffoe is embarrassing the Judiciary.
Addressing a press conference in Twi on Sunday, Afenyo-Markin directed his remarks to incumbent Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie over the remand of the New Patriotic Party Bono Regional Chairman, popularly known as Abronye DC.
“With the long period of time you’ve been a judge and with the painful removal of CJ Torkonoo through which you became Chief Justice, is this what you’re leaving for Ghana? It is embarrassing,” he stated.
The Minority Leader urged the Chief Justice to closely monitor proceedings in the lower courts, insisting that the handling of the matter was damaging the image of the Judiciary.
“Be vigilant and monitor what is going on down there. If a judge can rule that a person should be on remand until their trial is concluded, it embarrasses all of you,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin also called on senior members of the bench to speak out on the issue.
“Supreme Court judges, Court of Appeal judges, High Court judges speak up,” he added.
Kwame Baffoe is facing charges of publication of false news and offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace following alleged remarks made against a Circuit Court judge.
According to prosecutors, Abronye DC published a video online in which he allegedly attacked the judge and accused her of presiding only over political cases.
The prosecution further alleges that he sought to incite public anger against the judge by referring to her as “a politician who has covered your hair with a sack.”
His continued detention has triggered criticism from sections of the opposition New Patriotic Party, with party figures arguing that the remand period is excessive.
Afenyo-Markin maintained during the press conference that the Judiciary must guard against actions that could erode public confidence in the justice system.
