Ghana repatriates 327 stranded nationals from Côte d’Ivoire

The Government of Ghana is repatriating 327 nationals stranded in Côte d’Ivoire following a mass demolition exercise in Port Bouët Municipality, Abidjan.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 12, the affected Ghanaians lost their sources of livelihood and were left without accommodation after authorities in the municipality undertook a demolition exercise in areas where they resided.
The ministry disclosed that the government had already facilitated the return of 228 Ghanaians, who arrived in the country on Thursday, June 11. Arrangements were also made for the remaining returnees to be brought home on June 12.
“The Government of Ghana is repatriating three hundred and twenty-seven (327) Ghanaians who were affected by the ongoing mass demolition exercise being undertaken by authorities in the Port Bouët Municipality in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire,” the statement said.
It explained that all 327 individuals had been residing in communities affected by the demolitions and subsequently became stranded.
“All three hundred and twenty-seven (327) Ghanaian nationals were previously residing in areas affected by the demolition exercise and became stranded having lost their sources of livelihood and lacking the means to secure alternative accommodation in Côte d’Ivoire,” the ministry noted.
To support the evacuation effort, the government provided transportation for both the returnees and their belongings.
“The Government of Ghana has provided buses and trucks to convey our nationals and their belongings free of charge back to Ghana safely,” the statement added.
The ministry also indicated that Ivorian authorities had expressed willingness to compensate those affected by the demolition exercise. It said Ghana would continue engaging with the authorities to ensure that any promised compensation reaches the affected nationals.
“The Ministry further wishes to acknowledge that Ivorian authorities have expressed their desire to compensate the victims of their demolition exercise,” the statement said.
The government pledged continued support for the returnees, stressing its commitment to their welfare and reintegration into society.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs further expressed appreciation to the authorities of Côte d’Ivoire and other stakeholders for their cooperation in facilitating the repatriation process and said additional updates would be communicated when necessary.
