GHS confirms missing newborn at East Gonja District hospital

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed the disappearance of a newborn baby from the East Gonja District Hospital in Salaga, prompting an ongoing police investigation.

In a press release issued on June 11, 2026, the Savannah Regional Health Directorate described the incident as unfortunate and disclosed that the baby went missing on June 10, 2026, at the hospital.

The Directorate said an immediate search was conducted within the facility after the disappearance was reported, but the efforts failed to locate the child.

According to the statement, the matter was subsequently reported to the East Gonja District Police Command, which has since commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the disappearance.

The Regional Health Directorate expressed sympathy to the parents and family of the missing baby, assuring them of its full support as efforts continue to find the child.

It noted that the incident has caused significant concern and that authorities are committed to ensuring a thorough investigation.

The Directorate further stated that it is collaborating closely with the hospital management, the Ghana Police Service and other relevant stakeholders to establish the facts of the case and facilitate the safe return of the newborn.

“The Savannah Regional Health Directorate is working closely with the hospital management, the Ghana Police Service, and other relevant stakeholders to locate the missing baby and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the statement said.

The Health Directorate also sought to reassure the public that the safety, security, and well-being of patients, newborns, and all clients remain a top priority for the Ghana Health Service.

Meanwhile, members of the public who may have information regarding the whereabouts of the missing baby have been urged to contact the nearest police station, the Savannah Regional Health Directorate, or the East Gonja District Hospital.

Authorities assured that all information received would be treated with strict confidentiality.
