New Winneba attack: Police arrest six as 3 die, 15 injured

The Central Regional Police Command has arrested six suspects in connection with a violent attack at New Winneba in the Gomoa East Municipality, which left three people dead and about 15 others injured.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, when a group of about 300 people armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks allegedly stormed parts of New Winneba Township.

According to the Police, the group, drawn from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, attacked residents and caused extensive damage to shops, homes and other properties.

The Police said the six suspects arrested are 52-year-old Kweku Kakraba; Arko Thomas, 19; Samuel Tulasi, 19; Samuel Gyasi, 22; Emmanuel Okyere, 22; and Seth Osei, 22.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 2, the Central Regional Police Command said, “On 01/09/2026 at 10:40 am, about 300 irate mob wielding guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks… stormed the New Winneba Township, stores and residence of the natives, attacked them and caused damage to properties.”

The Police added that about 15 people, including one police officer, sustained injuries and were sent to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment.

Three people were also confirmed dead by the medical officer on duty.

Police personnel subsequently retrieved a locally manufactured single-barrel gun and an empty AAA cartridge from the scene.

As part of efforts to restore calm and prevent further attacks, personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters, Agona Swedru Division and Mankessim Division, together with the Inspector-General of Police’s special team, were deployed to the area.

Two armoured vehicles from the Police National Headquarters have also been deployed to reinforce security.

The Police said six snap checkpoints have been mounted in the area, while day and night patrols have been intensified.

“PID and CID personnel have also been deployed to monitor the situation,” the statement said.

The Command assured the public that “the area remains calm, and the situation is currently under control.”

The six suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with investigations.
