Bawku: CETAG demands probe into alleged military assault on lecturer

The Colleges of Education Teachers’ Association of Ghana (CETAG) has called for an immediate and independent investigation into the death of a lecturer at the Gbewa College of Education in Bawku, following an alleged encounter with military personnel during curfew hours.

The lecturer, Abdulai Issaka, a Science Lecturer at the College, reportedly suffered severe physical assault after he was found outside during curfew hours on Friday, September 11, 2026.

In a statement issued on Monday, September 14, CETAG said information available to the Association suggests that the alleged assault resulted in Issaka’s death.

CETAG described the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death as deeply disturbing and condemned what it said was the reported use of excessive and lethal force.

The Association stressed that an alleged curfew violation could not justify the use of deadly force against any individual.

“Being outside during curfew hours, irrespective of the circumstances, can never justify the beating of a person to death,” CETAG said.

The Association is demanding a thorough investigation into the events before, during and after the alleged incident.

It wants the investigation to identify the military personnel involved, establish the precise cause of Issaka’s death and determine whether any unlawful conduct occurred.

CETAG has called on the government, Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and other relevant institutions to ensure that the investigation is conducted without intimidation, interference or protection for anyone because of their rank or position.

It further demanded that anyone found culpable be arrested, prosecuted and brought before the law.
“No person irrespective of position, uniform, or authority should be above the law,” the Association said.

CETAG also called for full disclosure to Issaka’s family on the circumstances surrounding his death and urged the authorities to provide the bereaved family with the necessary support.

The Association appealed for calm at the Gbewa College of Education, urging management, staff and students to exercise restraint while the investigative and judicial processes proceed.
