Baffour Awuah case: EOCO demands law firm’s tax and banking records covering 2017–2025

The Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) has requested detailed tax and banking records from Sarkodie Baffour Awuah and Partners, seeking evidence of the law firm’s financial and tax compliance over nine years.
The Office, in a letter dated Saturday, October 30, 2026, asked the Accra-based firm to provide records covering 2017 to 2025, including evidence of payments made to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
The requested tax documents include Corporate Tax, Value Added Tax (VAT), levies and withholding tax records.
EOCO is also demanding a list of all bank accounts operated by the firm and corresponding statements covering the same period.
Other documents requested include audited financial statements, operating permits and renewal records from the relevant Municipal Assembly, as well as a list of employees, if any.
Explaining the purpose of the request, the Office stated, “Kindly furnish the Office with the under-listed information for the period 2017 to 2025 to facilitate our investigations.”
The request was made under Section 19 of the Economic and Organised Crime Office Act, 2010 (Act 804).
EOCO further indicated that the firm was expected to cooperate with the process, stating, “We solicit your cooperation in this regard.”
The records request comes amid EOCO’s investigation involving the firm’s senior partner, Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.
The MP was arrested on October 1, 2026, after voluntarily appearing at EOCO’s headquarters in Accra. His arrest followed an earlier operation by the Office at the Accra High Court and an arrest warrant issued on September 30.
He faces charges relating to alleged criminal conspiracy, dissipation of public funds and intentionally causing financial loss to the state, alongside allegations involving money laundering.
He pleaded not guilty and was granted GH¢10 million bail on October 3, with two parliamentary colleagues standing as sureties.
The investigation is connected to financial transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans and legal recovery services undertaken by the law firm.
Under Section 19 of Act 804, EOCO can request information and documents considered relevant to its investigations.
The Office’s latest letter does not specify the particular tax or banking transactions under investigation, and the request itself does not establish any wrongdoing by the law firm.
