Mahama tasks GAF engineers to clear New Accra Orbital right-of-way

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) engineer regiments to begin preparations for the clearance of the right-of-way for the proposed New Accra Orbital.

The directive follows the successful completion of the military’s assignment on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, where engineers cleared 175.6 kilometres of the project corridor in 19 weeks.

Speaking during the handover ceremony at Kwaso in the Ashanti Region on Monday, September 14, President Mahama praised the engineers for completing the task one week ahead of the 20-week deadline.

“I’m pleased to announce to the whole country Ghana that our Armed Forces have accomplished this mission one week ahead of schedule.”

He said the engineers’ performance had demonstrated their ability to contribute to major national infrastructure projects.

As part of the next assignment, Mahama said the engineer regiments would prepare to clear the right-of-way for the New Accra Orbital.

The President also announced plans to honour the military engineers for their work on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.

“I have given instructions that at the next National Honours, which we shall do to mark the 70th anniversary of independence of the Republic of Ghana, the engineers regiments of the Ghana Armed Forces shall receive an order of the Companion of the Volta.”

The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is a proposed 198.7-kilometre six-lane highway being developed under the government’s Big Push infrastructure programme.

The Ghana Armed Forces was tasked in April 2026 to undertake the early works and clear the expressway’s right-of-way within 20 weeks. The completed 175.6-kilometre clearance has now paved the way for the next stages of the project.
