Founder’s Day: Mahama urges Ghanaians to draw strength from Nkrumah’s vision

President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to embrace unity and selfless patriotism as the country marks Founder’s Day in honour of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

In a Facebook post on Monday, September 21, President Mahama said Nkrumah’s legacy extends beyond Ghana’s independence, highlighting his vision for Pan-African unity and economic self-reliance.

He said Nkrumah’s belief in the ability of Africans to manage their own affairs should continue to inspire Ghanaians.

“His bold declaration that ‘the black man is capable of managing his own affairs’ remains the bedrock of our national pride,” he wrote.

President Mahama said the work of nation-building remains unfinished and called on citizens to play their part in Ghana’s development.

“Let us draw strength from Osagyefo’s vision and contribute in our own way to attaining the Resetting Ghana Agenda,” he said.

He further urged Ghanaians to move beyond division and work towards economic freedom and social justice.

“I charge us all to rise above division, embrace selfless patriotism, and work tirelessly toward economic freedom and social justice,” the President stated.

President Mahama also extended his Founder’s Day wishes to Ghanaians at home and abroad, urging them to continue contributing to the building of a prosperous and resilient Ghana.

Founder’s Day is observed on September 21 to commemorate the birthday of Kwame Nkrumah. The Ministry of the Interior has declared Monday, September 21, 2026, a statutory public holiday.

Nkrumah was born in Nkroful in 1909 and became a central figure in Ghana’s independence struggle. Under his leadership, the Gold Coast gained independence from British rule on March 6, 1957, and became Ghana.
