Afenyo-Markin files fresh defamation suits against Gyamfi, Eric Adjei after court setbacks

Minority Leader Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin has initiated fresh legal proceedings against Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi and National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) CEO Eric Adjei over statements he considers defamatory.
The new actions follow procedural setbacks in earlier cases and are intended to bring the substantive claims before the Accra High Court.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Afenyo-Markin’s solicitor, F. Paa Kwesi Abaidoo of Dehyena Chambers, confirmed that a new writ had been filed against Mr Adjei after the discontinuance of an earlier case at the Achimota Circuit Court.
The new suit, numbered GJ/0061/2027, concerns statements allegedly made by the NEIP chief executive on Peace FM.
The lawyer also confirmed that a separate action, numbered GJ/0045/2027, had been filed against Mr Gyamfi on October 15 over remarks allegedly made during the Government Accountability Series and on Joy FM’s Newsfile programme.
The renewed legal action against Mr. Gyamfi follows an earlier ruling by the Accra High Court setting aside a previous writ because it did not adequately specify the allegedly defamatory publication in accordance with the applicable court rules.
Afenyo-Markin’s legal team said it disagreed with that decision but had filed a fresh writ in line with the court’s interpretation of the procedural requirements.
“Although we disagree with the High Court’s earlier decision setting aside our client’s previous writ, this new writ has been issued against the Defendants in accordance with the Court’s latest Interpretation of the rules,” the statement said.
The dispute with Mr Gyamfi stems from public exchanges surrounding the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and criticism of the operations of GoldBod.
Afenyo-Markin had challenged remarks attributed to the GoldBod chief executive, including the description of the Minority Leader as an “extortionist”.
The earlier suit reportedly sought GH¢15 million in damages, alongside a retraction and apology.
The separate case against Mr. Adjei follows public exchanges involving the NEIP chief executive and the Minority Leader over allegations of extortion.
The latest filings do not constitute a court determination that the statements in question were defamatory. The claims will have to be addressed through the relevant legal processes.
Concluding the statement, Mr. Abaidoo wrote, “The Mills of Justice Grind Slowly but with Great SURETY”.
