Kumasi to face one-month planned power outages as transmission upgrade reaches 70%

The 161kV Anwomaso–Ahodwo transmission line upgrade project in Kumasi has reached 70% completion, with GRIDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) targeting the end of November 2026 for its completion.
The two power sector institutions announced the progress in a joint statement issued on Thursday, October 29, 2026, saying the project was aimed at strengthening the transmission network and improving electricity supply reliability in Kumasi and its surrounding communities.
The project is scheduled for completion by the end of November 2026.
As work enters a critical stage, GRIDCo and ECG have announced planned interruptions in electricity supply to some communities along the transmission line route to facilitate the safe completion of the project.
The outages are scheduled to begin on Friday, October 30, and continue until Sunday, November 29, 2026, excluding weekends.
Affected communities will experience interruptions between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on scheduled days when the stringing works reach their respective sections.
Explaining the need for the interruptions, the companies said, “The project has reached a critical stage involving the stringing of transmission conductors on the towers. This activity requires planned interruptions in electricity supply to some communities along the line route to protect the lives of engineers, other personnel working on the project and members of the public.”
ECG will publish a detailed schedule showing the communities to be affected and their corresponding outage dates to enable consumers to plan accordingly.
GRIDCo and ECG have also appealed to residents and businesses in affected communities to exercise patience and cooperate with the exercise.
In their appeal, the companies said, “GRIDCo and ECG recognise the inconvenience that these planned interruptions will cause households, businesses, and other electricity consumers. We appeal to the public, particularly affected communities, for your patience, understanding, and cooperation throughout this period.”
They further described the project as an important investment in the Ashanti Region, saying:
“While the temporary interruptions are necessary to ensure the safety of personnel and the successful completion of the works, the project represents an important investment in strengthening the transmission network and improving the reliability of electricity supply in the Ashanti Region.”
The companies apologised for the inconvenience and reaffirmed their commitment to completing the project as scheduled.
