Four remanded over Worawora violence amid Akwantutenten Festival chieftaincy dispute

Four people have been remanded into police custody following disturbances at Worawora in the Oti Region, where tensions over the Akwantutenten Festival reportedly escalated into the burning of vehicle tyres and other acts of violence.
The Dambai Circuit Court remanded Kwame Aboagye Ahenkroa, 55, Prince Asante, 27, Daniel Wiafe, 20, and Kwabena Nsimbo, 22, on October 27, 2026.
The accused are scheduled to return to court on November 17, according to a statement from the Oti Regional Police Command dated October 28.
The disturbances occurred at Dwabrem, Worawora, on October 24 amid disagreements surrounding the commencement of rites for the Akwantutenten Festival.
The police statement said the tensions were reportedly linked to claims that a High Court injunction had been obtained to restrain the celebration.
Officers deployed to the area extinguished burning vehicle tyres and restored order.
The Oti Regional Security Council has called on the disputing families to resolve their differences through established legal processes.
At a meeting held on October 26 with representatives of the families, REGSEC directed all parties to seek redress through the appropriate courts and Houses of Chiefs.
It also emphasised that the chieftaincy dispute must be resolved lawfully and that those arrested in connection with the violence should be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The police have appealed to residents and all parties involved to exercise restraint and respect lawful processes to prevent further disturbances.
The statement was signed by John Nchor, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Public Affairs Officer for the Oti Region.
