FOSDA commends Mahama for appointing female security heads

The Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA) has commended Ghana’s President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, and his government for appointing Women as heads of the Ghana Prisons Services and the Ghana National Fire Service.

In a statement signed by the Executive Director for FOSDA, Theodora W. Anti stated that FOSDA believes the move is a bold and remarkable stride by the President and Government toward advancing gender equality and the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Agenda in Ghana.

“Appointment of DDGP 3 Patience Baffoe-Bonnie as Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service and DCFO Daniella Mawusi Ntow-Sapong as Chief Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) underscores a commitment to inclusive security governance.

“These appointments reflect the government’s dedication to creating opportunities for women in security leadership and contributing significantly to the UN Security Resolution 1325 on Women Peace and Security, Ghana’s National Action Plan on the Agenda (GHANAP 2), and the Affirmative Action Act 2024,” Madam Williams Anti stated.

She continued: “We also use the opportunity to congratulate DDGP 3 Patience Baffoe-Bonnie and DCFO Daniella Mawusi Ntow-Sapong on their meritorious appointment. They bring decades of expertise: BaffoeBonnie, a corrections and human rights advocate, previously spearheaded reforms in prison health systems, while Ntow-Sapong has distinguished herself in fire safety and operational efficiency.”

According to her, FOSDA’s ongoing monitoring of the implementation of GHANAP 2 has revealed areas for growth that present exciting opportunities for gender inclusion in the peace and security sector.

“Our report emphasizes the need for accountability mechanisms to enforce gender parity mandates in the security services. It is instructive to note that women’s active participation in the peace processes is scientifically proven to lead to more sustainable peace”, the Executive Director stated.
