Asante Democrats Laud President Mahama for the Appointment of Hon. Akwasi Opong-Fosu as GIPC Board Chairman
The Asante Democrats wish to express our profound appreciation to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama for the bold and strategic appointment of Hon. Akwasi Opong-Fosu as Chairman of the newly constituted Board of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC).
This appointment comes at a defining moment in the life of our nation—a period when the President is pursuing a transformational agenda anchored on agribusiness development, industrialisation, the 24-hour economy, and the mobilisation of both domestic and foreign direct investments to drive inclusive growth and job creation.
The GIPC, as the nation’s lead investment promotion agency, plays a pivotal role in realising these goals. It therefore requires visionary, competent and experienced leadership to reposition Ghana as a competitive and investor-friendly destination. We have no doubt that Hon. Opong-Fosu brings to this role a wealth of experience, a deep understanding of governance and development policy, and a lifelong commitment to public service.
Hon. Opong-Fosu has distinguished himself under every National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration:
•Under President Jerry John Rawlings, he served from 1982 to 2000 as District Chief Executive and Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development.
•Under President John Evans Atta Mills, he served as Acting Minister of Local Government and as the first Head of the Local Government Service, where he led key decentralisation and public sector reform initiatives.
•Under President John Dramani Mahama, he served with distinction as Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, and Minister of State at the Presidency.
Beyond his exemplary public service, Hon. Opong-Fosu has earned recognition on the international stage as President of Africa Growth Solutions, where he has championed African-led trade and investment solutions. He has been a passionate advocate and active participant in major global platforms, including:
•China-Africa Commercial Affairs Center
•AGOA Civil Society Network
•US-Africa Trade and Investment Conference
•Wall Street Economic Summit
•Crans Montana Forum
•Horasis Global Meeting, among others.
His networks and expertise will prove invaluable in aligning GIPC’s strategic focus with the government’s development priorities and attracting quality investments across sectors.
As Asante Democrats, we are particularly proud of this appointment. Hon. Opong-Fosu’s journey reflects the values of competence, dedication, humility and pan-African leadership. His role will not only help advance the President’s agenda but also inspire a new generation of Ashanti professionals and technocrats committed to national development.
We therefore congratulate Hon. Akwasi Opong-Fosu on this well-deserved appointment and wish him every success in this important national assignment.
Long live President John Mahama.
Long live the NDC.
Long live the Republic of Ghana.
Signed:
Kwame Ohene Agyemang
