Three aspirants file to contest NDC primaries in Akwatia

Three individuals have filed their nomination forms to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Akwatia Constituency, following the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament (MP), Ernest Kumi.
The aspirants include former Member of Parliament, Henry Boakye; the current NDC Constituency Secretary, Bernard Bediako Baidoo; and Erasmus Koney Ali.
According to the party’s timetable, vetting is expected to take place on Thursday, July 31, 2025. A ballot will follow to determine the positions of the candidates ahead of the primaries, which have been scheduled for Monday, August 4.
Henry Boakye, who previously represented the constituency, is seeking a return to Parliament and is believed to have the support of several long-time party faithful. Bernard Bediako Baidoo, on the other hand, is banking on his current position within the party and deep ties to the grassroots. Erasmus Koney Ali, though less visible politically, is said to be gaining quiet momentum, especially among youth groups.
Meanwhile, the NPP has settled on Solomon Kwame Asumadu, Chief Executive Officer of Owuo Mining Company, as its parliamentary candidate. His selection was the result of broad stakeholder consultations that led to a consensus, rather than a contested primary.
The death of Hon. Ernest Kumi, who won the seat for the NPP in the 2024 general elections, has opened up discussions around the political future of Akwatia — a constituency known for its electoral swings between the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The Akwatia seat remains highly strategic for both parties. Located in a mineral-rich area, the constituency has often seen development issues tied closely to politics, particularly concerning small-scale mining, youth unemployment, and infrastructure challenges.
