Prof Aning questions timing, intent behind Wontumi arrest, McDan demolition

Security expert Professor Kwesi Aning has questioned the motives and timing behind recent security operations targeting high-profile figures and businesses.
In an interview on Channel One TV over the weekend, Prof. Aning cited the arrest of NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), and the demolition of a McDan Group warehouse as incidents that require deeper public scrutiny.
“These actions must be situated within a broader conversation about how institutions exercise their mandates,” he said. “At what point do security agencies decide to act on intelligence? And what guides the execution of those operations?”
He questioned whether the basis for the warehouse demolition was new or had long existed but gone unaddressed for political reasons. On Wontumi’s case, he similarly asked whether the alleged violations by his company had been known earlier but ignored.
“The issue isn’t just legality. It’s about consistency in enforcement,” Prof. Aning stressed.
He warned that selective or politically motivated actions risk damaging public confidence in state institutions.
“We need to ask whether other relevant institutions had prior knowledge of these matters. If so, why didn’t they act? If not, what does that say about our intelligence coordination and institutional capacity?” he asked.
Prof. Aning concluded by calling for a national dialogue on institutional accountability, urging that public trust can only be built through fair and transparent governance.
