Dr. Apaak urges students to persevere for excellence at O’Reilly SHS Centenary

Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, has urged students of O’Reilly Senior High School to embrace perseverance and discipline as essential tools for academic success.
He made this appeal while addressing the school’s 100th anniversary celebration in Accra on Saturday, September 20, 2025.
The event was held under the theme “Steadfastness: An Endearing Value for Academic Excellence” and brought together alumni, teachers, parents, and dignitaries to reflect on the school’s remarkable century-long journey.
“You walk in the footsteps of giants. Many who passed through these classrooms are now leaders shaping Ghana and the world. You too must uphold the values of this great institution and strive to surpass the achievements of those before you,” he urged.
He explained that academic excellence does not come through shortcuts or momentary inspiration but through determination and consistency. “For students, steadfastness means maintaining focus on your studies even when distractions abound, persevering through difficult subjects, and never giving up on your dreams,” he said.
The Deputy Minister also highlighted the government’s ongoing reforms, such as Free SHS, new school infrastructure, and the integration of technology into classrooms. However, he cautioned that no policy can replace the personal discipline and hard work of students. “Excellence is not a destination but a journey—one that requires continuous learning, resilience, and sacrifice,” he emphasized.
Dr. Apaak encouraged students to take advantage of mentorship opportunities from alumni and guidance from teachers, while reminding them that qualities such as perseverance, integrity, and discipline will be vital in overcoming future challenges, including artificial intelligence, climate change, and global competition.
The anniversary celebration saw alumni and stakeholders pledge resources to improve facilities and create opportunities for students. Many current students expressed pride in being part of O’Reilly’s legacy and promised to uphold the values of their alma mater as it enters its next century of academic service.
