Accra-Kumasi Highway temporarily closed following multi-vehicle crash at Birimso Bridge

The Ghana Police Service has announced a temporary traffic diversion on the Accra-Kumasi Highway following a multi-vehicle crash that has completely blocked both directions of the road at the Birimso Bridge on the N6 Highway.

According to the Police, the crash involved a high-occupancy passenger bus, a loaded articulated truck and a sedan, resulting in a total obstruction of traffic for both Accra-bound and Kumasi-bound motorists.

In a public notice issued on Sunday, August 3, the Police said officers from the Eastern South Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) in Kibi have been deployed to the scene to manage the situation and restore the free flow of traffic.

To ease congestion, the Police said vehicles travelling towards Accra are being diverted through Kibi at Nsutam, while those heading to Kumasi are being rerouted through Apedwa.

“The Eastern South Regional Police MTTD team from Kibi are at the scene, and have temporarily diverted the traffic through Kibi at Nsutam for Accra bound traffic, and at Apedwa, for Kumasi-bound traffic, today 3/08/2026.”

The Police appealed to motorists and other road users to cooperate with officers directing traffic as efforts continue to clear the accident scene.

“We entreat motorists and other road users to cooperate with the officers on the ground as they work to restore normal traffic flow.”

The Service has not yet disclosed the cause of the crash or whether there were any casualties. Investigations are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
