Adutwum, Kennedy Agyapong, may lead NPP in 2028 – Afenyo-Markin

The Minority Leader in Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has disclosed some potential flagbearer contenders for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking on The KSM Show, Afenyo-Markin mentioned that former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will be seeking a return, while Kennedy Agyapong, who unsuccessfully contested in 2023, is expected to make a comeback.
“We hear names; the flagbearer for 2024 himself, Dr. Bawumia, is looking forward to returning. We’ve heard Kennedy Agyapong. We’ve heard Bryan Acheampong. We’ve heard Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum. And I’m sure a couple of others will also come out,” Afenyo-Markin noted.
Other potential contenders include Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong and former Education Minister Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum. The NPP’s post-election reflection has been a sobering experience, with the party acknowledging its disappointing performance in Parliament and reduced number of seats.
The party holds only 88 seats against the NDC’s 187. Afenyo-Markin emphasized the need for internal restructuring, party rebranding, and revitalizing the party base. “As a Minority Leader, you must also lead the rebranding. Now, there is no party leader. We don’t have a flagbearer yet.”
Afenyo-Markin’s comments come at a time when the NPP is seeking to rebrand itself and regain its footing after a disappointing election performance. The party’s leadership has acknowledged the need for change and is working to revitalize its base.
In a related development, Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team has threatened to ensure that NPP MPs who supported Dr. Bawumia in the presidential primaries lose their seats if Agyapong emerges victorious [1].
