Alliance for Civic Action lauds Mahama for increasing funds for prisoners’ meals

Alliance for Civic Action Commends President John Dramani Mahama for Raising Prison Feeding Allowance

A civic organisation, Alliance for Civic Action, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for approving an increase in the daily feeding fee for prison inmates from GH¢1.80 to GH¢5.00.

The group said the decision marks the first major adjustment in more than 15 years and will help improve nutrition and overall welfare in the country’s prisons.

According to the organisation, the new rate represents an additional GH¢3.20 per inmate per day, which translates into a 177.8 percent rise from the previous amount. It noted that while the increment comes with considerable budgetary implications, it remains a necessary investment in human dignity and social justice.

In a statement signed by its president, Francis Kwesi Badu-Mello, the body also pointed to Mr. Mahama’s earlier record of prioritising inmate welfare. It recalled that he was the first sitting head of state to visit prison facilities, where he directly engaged with prisoners and listened to their concerns. The move was described as an unprecedented step that highlighted the importance of leadership that extends compassion to all segments of society.

The organisation further explained that the feeding adjustment would go a long way in enhancing rehabilitation programmes. Improved nutrition, it said, will not only support the health of inmates but also reduce tensions within the facilities and make correctional centres more effective. It stressed that inmates are part of society and their treatment has direct implications for national security and stability.

The statement concluded by portraying the increase as a bold act of inclusive leadership. It said the decision reflects a President who is committed to upholding the rights and welfare of all Ghanaians, regardless of their circumstances.
