BBNaija Phyna’s sister Ruth Otabor dies after being hit by Dangote truck

Phyna’s sister, Ruth Otabor, has died after being struck by a truck belonging to the Dangote Group, in what the family has described as a devastating tragedy.
The incident, which involved a Dangote heavy-duty truck, occurred on August 13, 2025, near the Auchi Polytechnic in Edo State. Ruth, who had only recently completed her studies, was returning home when the vehicle reportedly lost control and ran into her. The impact left her with life-threatening injuries, leading to the amputation of her leg.
Despite efforts by doctors to stabilize her condition, Phyna’s sister, Ruth Otabor, passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at around 6:30 a.m. The family confirmed her death through their legal representatives, who also appealed to the public for privacy as they mourn their loss. They indicated that details of her funeral will be communicated in due course.
Witnesses said the Dangote truck veered off the road before hitting Ruth, who was walking close to the roadside. The accident caused panic in the area, with bystanders rushing to the scene to help before emergency services arrived.
The loss of Phyna’s sister has drawn widespread sympathy, particularly from fans of the reality star who took to social media to express their condolences. Many described Ruth as a vibrant young woman with a promising future, while others questioned the recurring cases of road crashes involving heavy-duty trucks.
This tragedy has once again drawn attention to concerns over road safety and the regulation of large trucks operating on Nigerian highways. Analysts and road safety advocates have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of transport rules, improved driver training, and better vehicle maintenance to reduce the rising number of fatal accidents.
For Phyna, winner of the Big Brother Naija reality show, the loss of her younger sister is a personal blow coming just days after Ruth’s graduation. Family sources say the Otabor household is “deeply shattered” by the sudden death and are relying on close relatives and friends for support during this difficult period.
