Black Stars fans tear into Jordan Ayew for ‘abysmal’ World Cup performance

Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has come under intense criticism after Ghana’s FIFA World Cup campaign ended with a disappointing defeat to Colombia.

The forward became the main target of frustrated supporters after Ghana exited the tournament following a 1-0 loss to Colombia on July 4 in the Round of 32 at Kansas City Stadium in Missouri.

Midfielder Jhon Arias scored the decisive goal in the 14th minute to send Colombia into the Round of 16. The South Americans dominated the contest, enjoying 61 percent possession and completing 532 accurate passes compared with Ghana’s 312. Ghana failed to register a single shot on target despite the narrow scoreline.

Ayew’s individual performances throughout the tournament also attracted heavy criticism. The Black Stars skipper featured against Panama, England, Croatia and Colombia but did not record a single shot on target across his four appearances.

Following Ghana’s elimination, social media platforms were flooded with criticism directed at the experienced forward.

“No elite player talks like this. This is why Ghana football is not progressing. I’m out as long as he is team captain,” user SaintJGarden wrote.

Another supporter, Mr Blazerow, posted: “Your dream but you walk around no shot no nothing but your dream. Masa go sleep.”

“The most unserious player in that team,” Melfah commented.

Afrakomah also questioned the captain’s mentality, writing: “A captain with a loser mindset. An athlete with a loser mindset.”

Several other reactions were more personal and contained abusive language directed at the Black Stars captain.

Speaking to journalists after the defeat, Ayew urged Ghanaians to accept the outcome, insisting Colombia had been the better side.

“We all want to win football matches but sometimes you have to accept when the opposition is slightly better. It’s football and we have to take it under the chin,” he said.

His remarks sparked another wave of criticism, with many supporters arguing that the team’s senior players, particularly the captain, should accept greater responsibility for Ghana’s disappointing campaign.

Football coach and pundit Christopher Nimley also questioned Ayew’s contribution, saying: “Jordan Ayew cannot press, neither can he dribble or outpace opponents. It is not a coincidence that our team is a better attacking threat when he is not on the pitch.”

The backlash has intensified debate over Ayew’s future as Black Stars captain ahead of the team’s next international assignments.
