Colombia knock out Ghana, leaves Africa with two remaining contenders

Colombia defeated Ghana 1-0 in a tense FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash on Friday, securing a place in the Round of 16 and ending the Black Stars’ campaign.
While leaving Morocco and Egypt as Africa’s only remaining representatives in the tournament.
The South Americans made a strong start and found the breakthrough in the opening stages of the match when Jhon Arias converted from close range after a well-worked attacking move.
The early goal proved decisive as Colombia maintained their advantage and successfully resisted Ghana’s attempts to level the score.
Ghana responded positively after falling behind and enjoyed periods of possession, but they struggled to create Jhon Arias -cut opportunities against a disciplined Colombian defence. Goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi kept the Black Stars in contention with several important saves, preventing Colombia from extending their lead.
Despite their efforts, the four-time African champions were unable to find an equaliser before the final whistle, bringing their World Cup journey to an end. Ghana had impressed many observers by progressing from Group L and reaching the knockout stage, raising hopes of a deep run in the competition.
The defeat also marked another setback for Africa’s challenge at the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup. Several African nations reached the knockout rounds, but most have since exited the tournament. Ghana’s elimination means only Morocco and Egypt remain in contention as the continent seeks a historic breakthrough on football’s biggest stage.
Morocco advanced after eliminating the Netherlands on penalties and are set to face Canada in the Round of 16. Egypt also secured their place among the final sixteen after overcoming Australia in a dramatic penalty shootout and will now take on Argentina for a place in the quarter-finals.
Colombia head coach Néstor Lorenzo praised his players for their discipline and determination, while Ghana’s camp expressed disappointment at the result but pride in the team’s overall performance throughout the tournament.
Colombia will now turn their attention to a Round of 16 encounter against Switzerland as they continue their pursuit of a first FIFA World Cup title.
For Ghana, the defeat ends a spirited campaign that showcased the team’s resilience and renewed optimism for the future of Ghanaian football.
