Black Stars: GFA dismisses Otto Addo after abysmal run of form

The Ghana Football Association has dismissed Otto Addo as Black Stars head coach, less than 100 days before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The decision, announced in a statement early Tuesday, takes immediate effect and follows Ghana’s 2–1 defeat to Germany in Stuttgart.
The statement indicated that a “new technical direction” for the national team would be outlined soon.
The second paragraph of the statement clarified that the separation was prompted by a string of disappointing performances, including a heavy 5–1 loss to Austria just days earlier.
The defeat to Germany, sealed by a late strike from Deniz Undav, marked Ghana’s fourth consecutive loss and deepened concerns over the team’s readiness.
The timing of the decision leaves Ghana in a difficult position ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. With just over two months to the tournament, questions have emerged over planning, stability and the team’s competitive outlook.
Addo’s second stint, which began in March 2024, produced mixed results.
He successfully guided Ghana through an unbeaten World Cup qualification campaign, recording six wins and one draw.
However, his overall record, eight wins, five draws and nine defeats in 22 matches, reflected inconsistency and fuelled criticism over tactical direction and game management.
The 50-year-old also failed to secure qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, despite having key players such as Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo in his squad.
Addo previously led Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars beat South Korea but exited at the group stage after losses to Portugal and Uruguay.
Ghana, preparing for their fifth World Cup appearance, have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama, with a new coach now expected to take charge under intense pressure.
