BoG Governor announces fellowships, scholarships for journalists to boost economic reporting

Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama has outlined professional fellowship, scholarship and international exchange opportunities for journalists as part of efforts to improve economic and financial reporting in Ghana.
He said the opportunities would be made available through the Bank’s Governor’s Economic and Financial Story of the Year Award, which seeks to encourage reporting that deepens public understanding of economic developments and contributes to national policy discussions.
Speaking at the 30th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards on Saturday, November 7, 2026, Dr. Asiama said the initiative was intended to invest in journalists and strengthen their capacity to report on complex financial and economic issues.
“In addition, opportunities will be provided for professional fellowships with respected institutions such as the Thomson Foundation, the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, and accredited local journalism training centres,” he said.
He added that scholarship opportunities would also be available for further studies in media, communications and journalism-related fields.
The programme will further provide opportunities for professional exchange programmes with international media organisations, including Bloomberg and Reuters.
Dr. Asiama said the Bank’s objective was to support the development of journalists capable of improving the quality of economic and financial reporting in the country.
“Our objective is simple: to invest in the development of journalists who can continue to elevate the quality of economic and financial reporting in Ghana,” he stated.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening specialist journalism in areas such as business, finance and economic policy, where reporting often requires an understanding of technical issues and their impact on the public.
The Governor said Ghanaian journalists had made progress in covering these subjects through investigative reporting, analytical features, broadcast discussions and digital storytelling.
The fellowship and scholarship opportunities form part of the package attached to the Governor’s Economic and Financial Story of the Year Award.
Dr. Asiama congratulated nominees and award recipients, acknowledging the role of journalists in informing the public, educating audiences and holding institutions accountable.
