Media critical to public understanding of monetary policy and financial reforms – BoG

Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama has described the media as an essential partner in helping Ghanaians understand monetary policy decisions, inflation trends, exchange rate movements, and financial sector reforms.
He said central bank policies were more effective when the public understood the decisions and their implications, making clear communication and engagement with journalists important to the work of the Bank.
Speaking at the 30th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards on Saturday, November 7, 2026, Dr. Asiama said economic and financial issues were often complex and required accurate and balanced reporting to make them accessible to citizens.
“At the Bank of Ghana, the media serves as an essential partner in promoting public understanding of economic and financial issues. Monetary policy decisions, inflation trends, financial sector reforms, exchange rate movements, and digital financial innovations are often complex subjects,” he said.
He added that journalists played a key role in translating these issues into information that people could understand and use.
“It is through accurate, balanced, and insightful reporting that these issues are translated into information citizens can understand and use,” he stated.
The Governor further identified communication as one of the most important responsibilities of central banks, stressing the need for transparency, credibility and accountability in their engagement with the public.
“One of the most important responsibilities of central banks today is communication. Our policies are most effective when they are clearly understood by the public,” he said.
“Transparency, credibility, and accountability require open and effective engagement with all stakeholders, including the media,” he added.
Dr. Asiama’s remarks come as economic policy decisions continue to influence issues that directly affect households and businesses, including the cost of borrowing, prices, exchange rates and access to financial services.
His comments also underline the role of economic journalism in explaining not only policy announcements but also their implications for the wider economy.
He said Ghanaian journalists had demonstrated increasing sophistication in covering business, finance and economic policy through investigative reporting, analytical features, broadcast discussions and digital storytelling.
The Governor used the occasion to reaffirm the Bank of Ghana’s support for initiatives that recognise excellence in economic and financial reporting.
