British Prime Minister steps down

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced his resignation after acknowledging growing concerns within his Labour Party about his leadership ahead of the next general election.

Speaking outside his official residence at 10 Downing Street on Monday, an emotional Starmer said he had listened to party members questioning whether he remained the right person to lead Labour into the future.

“I have heard the answer,” he said, adding that every decision he had made during his time in office had been driven by a commitment to put Britain first.

Starmer said he would remain Prime Minister until the Labour Party elects a new leader, a process he has asked the party’s governing body to complete before Parliament returns in September.

The outgoing leader also expressed gratitude to his family, particularly his wife, Victoria Starmer, whom he described as his “rock” throughout his political journey.

Visibly emotional, he said he now wants to devote more time to his family and “be the best dad I can to my beautiful children”.

Sir Keir Starmer, a former human rights lawyer, became Prime Minister in July 2024 after leading the Labour Party to a landslide general election victory that ended 14 years of Conservative rule.

Before becoming Prime Minister, he was elected to Parliament in 2015 as Labour Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras. He later won the Labour Party leadership contest in April 2020, succeeding former leader Jeremy Corbyn and overseeing significant reforms aimed at reshaping the party’s direction and restoring public confidence.

Attention has now turned to who could replace him. One of the leading contenders is Andy Burnham, who arrived in Westminster on Monday to be sworn in as Member of Parliament for Makerfield after winning a by-election last week.

The Labour Party is expected to begin the leadership selection process immediately, with political observers anticipating a closely watched contest that could shape Britain’s political future ahead of the next general election.

Starmer’s resignation marks the seventh time a British Prime Minister has stepped down in the last ten years.
