I work with every gov’t regardless of political party – Asantehene

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, says he works with every government elected by Ghanaians, irrespective of political affiliation.
Addressing a durbar in Canada over the weekend as part of his official visit, the revered traditional ruler said his commitment has always been to national development and peace rather than partisan politics.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stressed that he has consistently collaborated with successive administrations since 1999, noting that his role as a traditional leader requires him to support any government that receives a mandate from the people.
“I do not participate in Ghanaian politics. I work with every government that comes to power. In 1999, I came to meet Jerry Rawlings, and I worked with him,” he said.
He explained that his relationship with governments has remained unchanged through different political eras, adding that he has worked with former presidents across party lines in the interest of national progress.
“When he left, and Kufuor came in, I supported him. After that, President Mills came, and I supported him. Then I worked with Mahama during his first term. And when Akufo-Addo came, I had a good relationship with him. And I’m working with Mahama,” he stated.
The Asantehene indicated that respecting the will of Ghanaians is a responsibility he takes seriously, saying every elected government deserves cooperation to deliver development to citizens.
“I believe that when Ghanaians elect a government, I am obliged to work with them to bring about development. Those who listen, listen, and those who don’t, they don’t,” he said.
He also dismissed attempts by sections of the public to associate him with any political tradition, explaining that he does not publicly disclose his engagements with governments.
“I don’t make these conversations public. So when people say I belong to NPP I take it, when they say I’m in NDC, I take it. I even see add CPP to my affiliations. I do this for the country and for peace,” he added.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s remarks sought to reinforce his long-held position that traditional leadership should transcend partisan interests and remain focused on promoting unity.
