Central Region: police seize 209 drug slabs, two arrested

Two men have been arrested in Agona Swedru after police in the Central Region intercepted a large consignment of suspected narcotics.
A total of 209 compressed slabs of dried leaves were recovered, and authorities say the suspects attempted to bribe officers with GH₵100,000 to avoid arrest, an offer that was promptly rejected.
The suspects, identified as 28-year-old Godfred Acquah and 34-year-old Awudu Usman, were intercepted around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, along the Agona Asafo–Kwesitwukwaa road. Police discovered 154 slabs hidden in four nylon sacks inside a taxi cab bearing registration number GR 2932-26. Officers say the interception was part of routine patrols and intelligence-led checks targeting illegal drug movements in the area.

Following the arrest, a search was conducted at Usman’s residence in Asisim, a suburb of Agona Swedru. The police recovered an additional 55 slabs, bringing the total seizure to 209. According to authorities, Usman admitted ownership of the substances recovered from his home. “This operation demonstrates our commitment to disrupting the illegal drug trade and protecting communities from its dangers,” a police spokesperson said.
The Central Regional Police Command also confirmed that the suspects’ attempt to bribe the arresting officers with GH₵100,000 was rejected. Both men remain in custody and are expected to be arraigned in court to face charges related to possession of narcotics. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspects were linked to a larger network involved in the distribution of illegal substances.
Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and assist law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities. “Community cooperation is critical in the fight against illegal drugs. We call on residents to work with us to ensure that these substances do not reach the streets,” the spokesperson added.
The seizure in Agona Swedru marks one of the largest drug busts in the Central Region in recent months and underscores the Ghana Police Service’s dedication to enforcing the law, maintaining public safety, and promoting integrity in its operations.
