CJ suspension: Seasonal Association GBA can’t distract Mahama – Dr. Apaak

The Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, has stated that President John Dramani Mahama will not be distracted by any
The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has reportedly passed a resolution urging President Mahama to revoke the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
This decision was made during the GBA’s Mid-Year Conference held at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra on April 26, 2025.
According to a report by thelawplatform.online, members of the Bar expressed disappointment over the suspension. Their concerns grew stronger after reviewing the details of the three petitions submitted for the Chief Justice’s removal.
Many members of the GBA believe the reasons presented in the petitions are not convincing enough to justify such an action by President Mahama.
In a Facebook post, the lawmaker stated that the GBA can go to court if they believe President Mahama has broken any law.
“President John Dramani Mahama will not be distracted by a Seasonal Association, which only finds its voice when the NDC is in power.
“If the GBA believes he has broken any laws, the courts are there,” Dr. Apaak stated.
Meanwhile, A CDD-Ghana fellow and social advocate, Prof. Stephen Kwaku Asare, known commonly as Kwaku Azar, has also questioned the GBA’s stands on the matter.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, April 27, Kwaku Azar expressed skepticism over the GBA’s recent call for President John Dramani Mahama to revoke the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, citing the association’s perceived inconsistency.
“Less than a week after calling for the rule of law to prevail, the GBA has reversed course — now urging the President to revoke the suspension of the Chief Justice,” he noted.
Kwaku Azar questioned whether the GBA supports the Chief Justice’s personal selection and submission of five names for Supreme Court appointment, contrary to Article 144(2) of the Constitution.
“Until the GBA meaningfully addresses these serious constitutional questions, it ought to suspend its resolution calling for the revocation of the Chief Justice’s suspension,” he stated.
