Competence and vision should decide delegates’ votes – Bawumia

Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has stated that although he is widely considered the frontrunner in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026, he remains committed to working hard and engaging delegates across the country.
Dr. Bawumia, who is seeking re-election as the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2028 elections, has been campaigning extensively in constituencies nationwide. Observers have noted that he is touring more intensively than his opponents despite being the favourite.
In an interview with Spear FM in Damongo during his campaign tour of the Savannah Region, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need to respect party delegates by personally reaching out to them. “I never take anything for granted.
In politics, you have to keep working hard until everything is done,” he said. He also explained that the Savannah Region is the 13th of the country’s 16 regions that he has visited as part of his campaign.
Dr. Bawumia called on delegates to base their votes on his leadership qualities and vision for the party and the country, rather than regional considerations. “I’m asking for the support of our NPP delegates. I’m campaigning, that’s why I’m in the region. I’m asking for their support on January 31st that they should look at voting for me on the basis, not that because I’m from the north; we don’t vote on that,” he said. “They should vote for me on the basis of my track record, of my competence, of my integrity and of the vision that I have for the country and of the experience.”
Highlighting his experience as Vice President under President Nana Akufo-Addo, Dr. Bawumia noted that many have recognized him as one of the most effective vice presidents in the country’s history. He appealed to delegates to support him in becoming an effective President, stating, “I believe that this party, the NPP, under my leadership will come back to power after the 2028 election. We are going to work hard for them and work hard for the people of Ghana. I want them to have their trust in me and I will deliver victory in 2028, by the grace of God.”
Dr. Bawumia has so far toured 13 regions and is yet to visit the Northern, Greater Accra, and Ashanti Regions. He faces competition from four other candidates: Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former NPP General Secretary; Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Assin Central MP and businessman; Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Minister for Food and Agriculture and Abetifi MP; and Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, MP for Bosomtwe and former Education Minister.
