Discipline not optional in schools – Dr. Apaak

Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Apaak says discipline is essential in schools, warning that indiscipline threatens effective teaching and learning outcomes nationwide.
Dr. Apaak delivered the message at the 75th anniversary and speech and prize-giving day of T. I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School in Kumasi on March 28, 2026, where he addressed students, teachers, and stakeholders on the state of education.
He stressed that discipline remains the foundation upon which meaningful education is built, cautioning that rising cases of misconduct in schools must be confronted decisively.
“Let me state this clearly: discipline is not optional. It is foundational to education,” he said.
According to him, no learning environment can thrive in the absence of order and responsibility.
“No meaningful learning can take place in an environment where order, respect, and responsibility are absent,” he added, urging students to take personal responsibility for their conduct.
Dr. Apaak advised students to prioritise values over short-term choices, reminding them that their future will be shaped more by character than academic performance.
“The values you cultivate today, respect, humility, self-control, and integrity, will define your future far more than your academic results alone,” he noted.
He also called on parents and guardians to play a stronger role in shaping the behaviour of their children, stressing that discipline begins at home.
He encouraged them to provide guidance and lead by example long before students enter the classroom.
Teachers and school authorities, he said, must continue to enforce rules consistently while offering mentorship and support to students.
He assured them of government backing in addressing indiscipline, stating that authorities will work with stakeholders to protect the integrity of the education system.
Dr. Apaak further highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at improving education quality, including investments in infrastructure and teacher development.
He maintained that a disciplined school environment is critical to achieving the broader goal of producing responsible, capable citizens.
