Duncan-Williams: Church must lead public education against galamsey

By: Eugene Dogbatse Atsu
Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams says the Church must take a leading role in educating Ghanaians on the dangers of galamsey and protecting the environment.
The Founder and General Overseer of Action Chapel International has called on churches across the country to become more actively involved in the fight against illegal mining, arguing that religious institutions have a responsibility beyond spiritual guidance.
Speaking on Joy FM’s August 17, Archbishop Duncan-Williams said the Church possesses significant influence and can help shape attitudes and behaviours that contribute to national development.
According to him, churches should use their platforms to raise awareness about the harmful effects of galamsey on water bodies, farmlands and the livelihoods of communities affected by illegal mining activities.
He noted that while prayer remains an important tool for addressing national challenges, it should be complemented by practical efforts to educate citizens and promote responsible conduct.
“The Church must educate people,” he stressed, adding that public awareness is critical if the country is to successfully address the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining.
The Archbishop explained that churches have direct access to millions of Ghanaians through their congregations and can therefore play a key role in changing mindsets and encouraging respect for environmental laws.
He further urged religious leaders to consistently speak about the consequences of galamsey and encourage their members to support efforts to protect the nation’s natural resources.
Archbishop Duncan-Williams also emphasized the need for collective action, saying the fight against illegal mining cannot be left to government alone. He believes faith-based organizations, traditional leaders, civil society groups and citizens all have important roles to play.
He added that the Church, in particular, has an opportunity to use its influence not only to encourage prayer but also to promote education, responsible citizenship and environmental stewardship.
