EOCO arrests Miracles Aboagye over alleged corruption probe

Spokesperson for the Dr. Bawumia Campaign Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has reportedly been arrested by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) at the Accra International Airport over alleged corruption.
Mr. Aboagye, who previously served as Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCC), was reportedly picked up by EOCO officers on suspicion of corruption linked to activities during his tenure in office.
Reports indicate that the arrest occurred at the airport, although it remains unclear whether he was attempting to travel outside the country at the time.
The development has generated widespread political discussion, coming just days after Mr. Aboagye publicly announced his intention to contest for the position of National Director of Communications of the NPP ahead of the party’s internal elections.
Private legal practitioner and member of the NPP communications team, Kwesi Botchway Jnr. Esq., confirmed the arrest in a social media post. He suggested that the development may be connected to Mr. Aboagye’s recent declaration of interest in the influential party position.
“This arrest comes shortly after his decision to contest for the National Director of Communications position,” Mr. Botchway reportedly stated, raising concerns about the circumstances surrounding the action.
Sources close to the matter say EOCO is investigating allegations of corruption related to Mr. Aboagye’s administration of the IMCC, an institution responsible for coordinating and advancing Ghana’s decentralisation agenda. However, details of the specific allegations have not yet been made public.
As of the time of filing this report, EOCO had not issued an official statement outlining the reasons for the arrest or indicating whether formal charges would be filed against the former presidential staffer.
Mr. Aboagye has been a prominent figure within the NPP and served as one of the key spokespersons for Dr. Bawumia during the 2024 election campaign. He also held several roles within local governance and decentralisation under the Akufo-Addo administration.
The arrest adds to a growing list of investigations by state anti-corruption agencies involving former public officials and is expected to attract significant political and public interest in the coming days.
Meanwhile, supporters of the NPP have called for due process to be followed, insisting that Mr. Aboagye should be presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law.
The case remains under investigation.
