Ghana’s Health Insurance Scheme hits 70 percent UHC coverage – Dr. Victor Bampoe

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Chief Executive, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, has announced the Authority’s impressive attainment of 70 percent Universal Health Coverage (UHC), as at the first half of 2026.
He credited the exceptional achievement to the entire staff’s commitment and dedication to their duties, making the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) an enviable shining model in the African continent.
The elated Dr. Bampoe addressed a staff durbar in the forecourt of the Authority’s Head Office, in Accra.
He emphasized, “These are things that people see… that connect us to people, and that is why I am so proud that when we came in, our coverage was 56 percent and now I am being told we are hovering around 70 percent. I think we must be proud of ourselves,” he said.
Dr. Bampoe attributed the gains to several innovations, including the Market Storm, Campus Connect, and the Faith and Wellness Drive campaign, which he said have helped the Authority reach the next generation of subscribers.
While commending staff, the Chief Executive cautioned the staff against complacency, urging them to work even harder to push the NHIS to the next level. “Whilst we should be proud of how far we have come, we shouldn’t be complacent, because our next chapter will demand even greater commitment from us,” he said.
He encouraged the staff to keep innovating, noting that the challenges ahead would require fresh thinking, smarter systems, and new ideas and would demand the involvement of everyone to ensure, in his words, “we have ways of servicing our clients.”
Dr. Bampoe also called for staff support for management, stressing that the ongoing transformation agenda would require teamwork, collaboration, and shared commitment to the institution’s goals.
“Let’s remain dedicated to our duties. If there is anything I know, it is the fact that you are dedicated to your duties, and I see it every day,” he said. “Let’s continue to improve on our professionalism, our integrity, our punctuality, our accountability and excellent customer service. Let these principles define everything that you do.”
He further urged staff to use the Authority’s resources judiciously, noting that every cedi saved through responsible stewardship “is a cedi that can be invested in improving services to the Ghanaian people.
