Expedite investigation into Wa Technical Institute riot – Dr. Apaak to Committee
Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, has urged the committee probing the recent riot at Wa Technical Institute to fast-track its work and provide clarity on the causes of the disturbance.
Dr. Apaak visited the school on Saturday after being briefed by the Municipal Chief Executive on the incident, which disrupted academic activities and left management concerned about the safety of staff and students.
He said the situation he observed was unacceptable. “What I’ve seen is very disappointing. The situation is very worrying and it is having an impact on teaching and learning,” he said.
He added that although the level of disorder was troubling, he appreciated the quick response by school leadership and local authorities.
“Although I’m very disappointed, I want to commend the MCE, the board chair, the principal and management for moving in to secure the situation,” he noted.
School authorities told the Deputy Minister that a committee had already been constituted to investigate the incident, which has been described as a clash involving some students and their collaborators against other students.
Dr. Apaak said the ministry expects the committee to work with urgency and provide a clear explanation of what triggered the unrest.
“Because we don’t know the actual causes of this issue, we cannot speak in detail, save to say we expect the investigation to unravel what has caused this,” he explained.
He stressed that the ministry will not condone student behaviour that threatens order or damages state property.
“As a government, as a ministry, we won’t tolerate disorder, insubordination and the destruction of public property from anyone,” he stated.
The Deputy Minister was accompanied by the Principal of Wa Technical Institute, Adams Saaka; the Municipal Chief Executive, Nurah Danwanaa; Dasaana Adamu FShs; and the Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare.
Security presence on campus has since been strengthened as management works to restore normal academic activity.
Dr. Apaak urged students to cooperate with school authorities and said the findings of the committee will guide preventive measures and help reinforce discipline.
He noted that creating a safe and stable environment for teaching and learning remains central to the ministry’s mission.
