Ministry of Education assures swift response to Labone SHS desk shortage

The Ministry of Education has assured the public that immediate action is being taken to address the reported furniture shortage at Labone Senior High School (SHS) in Accra.
Recent media reports indicated that some newly enrolled Form One students at the school were sitting on the floor during lessons, while others perched with their sitting mates.
In response, the Ministry confirmed that Labone SHS formally requested 3,282 mono desks through the Ghana Education Service (GES), and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has approved and allocated the full number.
“Delivery to the school is scheduled to be fully completed by the close of Monday, 24 November 2025,” the Ministry said in a statement.
Hashmin Mohammed, Press Secretary to the Minister of Education, said the intervention is part of a broader programme to address furniture gaps nationwide.
“We remain steadfast in ensuring that every Ghanaian student learns in a safe, supportive, and conducive environment. This timely intervention at Labone SHS reflects our strategy to systematically and sustainably close furniture gaps across all second-cycle institutions,” he said.
The Ministry added that the initiative forms part of a larger plan to provide 200,000 mono desks for 100 double-track senior high schools that require priority support as they transition into the single-track system.
It further reiterated that the government will continue collaborating with GES, GETFund, and other partners to deliver the infrastructure necessary to promote effective teaching and learning across the country.
