Gender Ministry condemns assault on woman in viral video

The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection has condemned a violent assault captured in a viral video in which a man is seen attacking a woman, alleged to be his wife.
In a statement, the ministry said no individual has the right to subject another person to abuse, stressing that the incident reflects an unacceptable act that violates the rights and dignity of the victim.
“We strongly condemn this barbaric act in its strongest terms,” the Ministry said, adding that the behaviour is “highly punishable by law.”
According to the release, the sector Minister has contacted the Ghana Police Service to ensure a thorough investigation.
The Gender Ministry appealed to eyewitnesses with credible information to assist law enforcement promptly. “Justice must be served, and all persons with vital information must support ongoing efforts,” the statement added.
It said domestic and sexual-based violence remains a serious national problem requiring active public involvement.
It urged Ghanaians to report suspected abuse as early as possible to protect victims from further harm.
“Perpetrators of domestic violence will face the full rigors of the law,” the statement assured.
The release also emphasised the need for increased vigilance among the public, warning that such incidents often go unreported until they escalate.
It encouraged citizens to use available reporting channels, including the Domestic Violence Call Centre on 0800-111-222 and the Ministry’s Helpline of Hope on 0800-800-800, 0800-900-900, or to visit the nearest police station.
The ministry further highlighted that the fight against domestic violence requires collective responsibility, noting that early reporting can save lives.
“No form of abuse should ever be tolerated, and every Ghanaian has a role in protecting vulnerable persons,” the statement said.
It called on community leaders, neighbours, and families to support victims and break the culture of silence surrounding domestic abuse.
The ministry emphasised that safeguarding women, children, and all vulnerable groups remains central to its mandate and urged continued partnership from the public to eliminate violence in homes across the country.
