President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that the government, through the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), has recovered over GH₵600 million in misappropriated public funds, signaling a robust crackdown on corruption and economic crimes.
Addressing Parliament during his 2026 State of the Nation Address on Friday, February 27, Mahama highlighted progress in investigations and prosecutions targeting financial misconduct and organised criminal activity.
“As of December 2025, EOCO has recovered more than GH₵600 million. The office has investigated 462 cases, with 15 currently under prosecution. It has dismantled transnational carjacking syndicates and has recovered 29 luxury vehicles that were stolen,” the President revealed.
Mahama stressed that the administration’s anti-corruption drive applies to all, regardless of position or political affiliation. “The government remains resolute that corruption will not be tolerated regardless of status or political affiliations. The Attorney General’s Office will continue with both criminal prosecution and non-conviction-based assets recovery mechanisms to ensure that stolen public resources are returned for national development,” he stated.
The President noted that EOCO’s investigations span a wide array of alleged offences, including procurement violations, money laundering, tax evasion, cybercrime, and cross-border organised crime. He further indicated that several of the cases involve former ministry officials accused of authorising irregular payments, senior personnel of state-owned enterprises linked to contract irregularities, and private business operators suspected of benefiting from inflated agreements.
Highlighting the ongoing nature of the work, Mahama said hundreds of additional cases remain under active scrutiny, while many others have advanced to the prosecution stage. “We are determined that every cedi stolen from the public purse must be traced and returned. Ghana’s democracy and development demand nothing less,” he said.
The President’s address also underscored the broader significance of EOCO’s work, noting that the recoveries and prosecutions are vital to protecting public resources, strengthening governance, and restoring public confidence in state institutions. By tracking stolen funds and holding perpetrators accountable, the government aims to ensure that the nation’s development agenda is not undermined by financial misconduct.
