Upper East Tour: GH¢36m released to 107 district health facilities under Free Primary Healthcare initiative – Anatu Bogobiri Esq

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has released about GH¢36 million to 107 district health facilities across the country to support the implementation of the Free Primary Health Care Programme.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA, Madam Anatu Anne Seidu Bogobirir, announced this on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at the Free Primary Health Care Durbar at the Zuarungu Health Centre in the Upper East Region.
Representing NHIA Chief Executive Officer, Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, Madam Bogobirir said the latest disbursement formed part of the government’s efforts to strengthen preventive healthcare.
She said government had also spent GH¢443 million to retool selected facilities for the programme.
“In line with your commitment to establish a preventive health system, government has paid GHS 443 million to retool selected health facilities to position them for the Free Primary Health Care Programme,” she said.
Mad. Bogobirir said about GH¢4.2 million of the latest funding had gone to 14 health facilities in the Upper East Region, with Bawku West receiving the highest allocation of GH¢514,418.71.
“Furthermore, just last week, about GHS 36 million nationwide was released to 107 district health facilities for the implementation of the Free Primary Health Care Programme,” she said.
She explained that the funds were being channelled directly to district health facilities to improve efficiency and reduce delays.
“In line with the government’s commitment to efficiency, funds for Free Primary Healthcare are flowing straight to District Health facilities,” she said.
“This direct payment model reduces delays and guarantees that resources are available at the point of care for Ghanaians,” she added.
