Upper East Tour: NHIS active membership rises to 76% as monthly claims payments boost provider confidence -Anatu Bogobiri Esq

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) says the payment of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) claims on a monthly basis has restored confidence among healthcare providers and improved service delivery.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA, Anatu Anne Seidu Bogobirir, made the disclosure on Thursday, August 13, 2026, while representing the NHIA Chief Executive Officer, Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, at the Free Primary Health Care Durbar at Zuarungu in the Upper East Region.

According to her, the government cleared all outstanding NHIS claims arrears amounting to about GH¢963 million by April 2025.

She said claims have since been paid every month, a development she said had provided greater predictability and stability for healthcare providers.

“Claims payment is the anchor of the NHIS,” she said.

Madam Bogobirir disclosed that total claims payments exceeded GH¢2 billion in 2025, with more than GH¢153 million going to health facilities in the Upper East Region.

She added that between January and July 2026, the NHIA had paid a further GH¢1.4 billion in claims nationwide, while facilities in the Upper East Region received more than GH¢100 million.

“Your Excellency, this consistent payment regime has restored provider confidence and improved service delivery at the point of care,” she said.

The NHIA official also highlighted an increase in active NHIS membership, saying it rose from 54 per cent at the end of 2024 to 66 per cent at the end of 2025.

As of June 2026, active membership had reached 76 per cent nationally, while the Upper East Region recorded 67 per cent.

Mad. Bogobirir further said an estimated 17 million Ghanaians had accessed healthcare through the NHIS since 2025.
