GH¢500m allocated for district housing rollout, Mahama says

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that government will begin rolling out a District Housing Scheme this year, backed by a GH¢500 million allocation in the national budget.
He said the initiative forms part of a broader housing vision aimed at addressing Ghana’s housing deficit and expanding access to affordable homes across the country over the next four years.
He disclosed that the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources is already working on the implementation framework for the programme, with selected districts expected to benefit from the first phase.
Speaking during an inspection of the Saglemi Housing Project August 20th, Mahama indicated that the district housing initiative marks the beginning of a new chapter in the government’s housing agenda.
“Looking forward to this. This is not going to be the last. We have a big housing programme coming out, and it will be announced by the finance minister in the new budget,” he said.
According to the President, the Finance Minister has already provided GH¢500 million in this year’s budget to support the initiative, paving the way for construction to commence in selected districts.
“Already, the Works and Housing Ministry is working on the District Housing Scheme. The Finance Minister provided 500 million cedi in this year’s budget, and so this year, they’ll start rolling out some of those district houses in selected districts,” Mahama stated.
He stressed that the programme is intended to transform the housing sector and improve access to decent accommodation for many Ghanaians, particularly public sector workers and low- to middle-income earners.
“And there again, it will be the beginning of a new housing vision that this government wants to roll out over the next four years,” the President added.
