Ghana’s Black Queens honoured in Parliament after historic WAFCON Bronze

Ghana’s national women’s football team, the Black Queens, received high praise and official recognition from Parliament on Tuesday, July 29.
This follows their outstanding third-place finish at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The Black Queens, Ghana’s senior women’s football team, were officially recognized for their exceptional performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they made a memorable run that reignited national hope in women’s football.

Fresh from their return to Accra on Monday, July 28, the team received widespread praise for their spirited showing throughout the tournament in Morocco. Their campaign culminated in a dramatic penalty shootout victory over South Africa to secure third place — their best finish in nearly a decade.
Members of Parliament lauded the players not just for their bronze medal, but for the discipline, determination, and teamwork they displayed. The visit turned into a celebration of resilience, with lawmakers urging greater recognition and support for women athletes in the country.
Following their arrival, the team began a series of meaningful activities, including a visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum to pay respects to Ghana’s founding father. It was a powerful gesture that linked past national ideals with present achievements.
Two of the squad’s brightest stars, captain Portia Boakye and midfielder Grace Asantewaa, were named in the official CAF Team of the Tournament — a nod to their consistency, leadership, and technical brilliance.
The Black Queens’ success has energized discussions around the future of women’s sports in Ghana.
