Gov’t committed to improving conditions of service for soldiers – Ato Forson

The government will improve conditions of service for soldiers, Acting Defence Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has assured, citing welfare reforms and operational readiness.
Dr Forson gave the assurance during opening remarks at the Ghana Armed Forces’ End of Year West African Soldiers’ Social Activities (WASSA) held on Friday, where he outlined policy priorities aimed at strengthening morale and professionalism within the ranks.
“The well-being of our men and women in uniform remains a top priority of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration,” Dr Forson said. “Accordingly, the government will continue to take deliberate steps to improve personnel welfare and living standards.”
He stressed that welfare improvements are central to operational effectiveness, noting that “significant attention is being given to key welfare areas, including accommodation, healthcare, training, career progression and general welfare.”
According to the acting minister, these interventions are designed to ensure that the Ghana Armed Forces remain “responsive, modern and operationally ready” amid evolving internal and external security challenges. “The Ministry of Defence will continue to provide clear strategic policy direction to keep the armed forces prepared for emerging threats within our borders and across the subregion,” he added.
Dr Forson acknowledged the sacrifices of service personnel, saying their commitment has kept the country stable.
“Through their dedication and resilience, Ghana remains strong and united in the face of both internal and external security challenges,” he said, while commending the Military High Command for sustained professionalism.
Beyond serving personnel, the acting defence minister said the government recognises its obligations to retirees and veterans.
“Welfare responsibilities extend beyond those in active service to retirees and veterans who dedicated the prime of their lives to national service,” he noted.
He disclosed that the concerns of the 1995/96 year group and over-aged retirees are receiving attention through ongoing engagements.
“These discussions are aimed at fair, compassionate and sustainable solutions,” Dr Forson said.
Dr Forson also thanked partners and stakeholders for their support to the ministry and the armed forces.
“Your unwavering support has strengthened cooperation, professionalism and operational effectiveness across the Ministry of Defence and the Ghana Armed Forces,” he stated.
As the end-of-year military tradition was observed, he urged personnel to draw inspiration from shared values.
“Let us be reminded of the unity, discipline and tradition that bind us together as one Armed Forces family,” he said, expressing appreciation to officers and soldiers for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the government led by President Mahama.
