High Court grants Freddie Blay GH¢800k bail over demolition dispute

The Koforidua High Court has granted bail to former New Patriotic Party National Chairman, Freddie Blay, in the sum of GH¢800,000 with two sureties.
The court ruled that the sureties must be residents of Accra and present valid Ghana Cards before the bail conditions can be satisfied.
The decision comes after Mr. Blay was earlier remanded by the Akropong Circuit Court in connection with an alleged demolition dispute at Kitase in the Eastern Region.
Mr. Blay is expected to appear again before the circuit court on April 9 as police continue investigations into the matter.
The former party chairman was handed over to the Ghana Police Service at Akropong after a warrant issued for his arrest was executed in Accra on Monday, March 16, 2026.
The case stems from allegations that Mr. Blay ordered the demolition of a house under construction on a parcel of land at Kitase.
Police say the landowner lodged a complaint after Mr. Blay allegedly failed to respond to an invitation to assist with investigations. Charges were later filed in the matter.
According to investigators, Mr. Blay did not appear before the court on the scheduled arraignment date in April 2025, prompting the court to issue a warrant for his arrest.
However, individuals close to the former New Patriotic Party chairman argue that he had no knowledge of the warrant before he was arrested.
They explain that the disagreement is connected to land Mr. Blay reportedly acquired in 1994, which subsequently became the subject of a legal dispute.
The sources further state that Mr. Blay never instructed anyone to demolish a building on the land.
Instead, they claim he authorised the clearing of a bare portion of the property in January 2026 to prevent the area from becoming a breeding ground for dangerous animals, including reptiles.
They also indicate that although the complainant previously obtained a favourable ruling from the Koforidua High Court, that decision has since been challenged on appeal.
According to them, attempts to serve the complainant with legal processes connected to the appeal have so far been unsuccessful.
The case is expected to continue before the Akropong Circuit Court when Mr. Blay returns on April 9 while investigations remain ongoing.
