I’ll use Twi to win NPP power if elected National Chairman – Wontumi

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, says he will rely on Twi and grassroots mobilisation to secure victory in the 2028 elections.
Popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the outspoken party figure is seeking to become National Chairman of the opposition NPP, positioning himself as a candidate deeply rooted in the base of the party.
Explaining his approach on a campaign tour over the weekend, Wontumi argued that effective leadership within the NPP must go beyond academic credentials and elite circles.
“It’s only Twi I’m going to speak,” he stated, stressing that communication in a widely understood local language would strengthen engagement with party members at the grassroots.
“You see normally when we talk about leadership, the elites believe those in their circle are born to lead,” he said. “But when you’re talking about leadership, the certificate doesn’t work. It is the grassroots that win.”
He underscored his long-standing involvement in party structures, presenting it as proof of his readiness for the top organisational role.
“I have worked as a constituency chairman, I have worked as a constituency executive, I know what they need, I know what they want,” he noted.
Wontumi maintained that his strategy would energise the party’s base and improve its electoral fortunes.
“If you elect me as National Chairman, I’m going to use Twi to speak and do this job and the grassroots will respond,” he added. “We are going to make sure we win Election 2028.”
His bid, however, comes amid strong competition within the party. Former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko and former General Secretary John Boadu are also in the race, setting up what is expected to be a keenly contested internal election.
The contest is seen by political observers as a critical moment for the NPP as it reorganises in opposition and prepares for the next general election cycle.
