Akufo-Addo turns 82 as global election roles expand

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has turned 82 today, marking his second year since leaving office.
Social media platforms were flooded with goodwill messages celebrating the former leader, whose presence in Ghana’s public life has spanned nearly five decades.
Tributes poured in from political allies, family members, and admirers, reflecting his enduring influence in national and international affairs.
Former First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo led the well-wishers with an emotional message addressed to her husband.
“Happy birthday to my husband @NAkufoAddo. I pray that God grants you renewed strength and lights your path in this new chapter. Love you always,” she wrote on social media.
Former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia also extended his wishes, stating, “Wishing you joy, good health, and countless blessings. Happy Birthday, sir! @NAkufoAddo.”
Members of Parliament, including Kojo Oppong Nkrumah and Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, joined in celebrating the milestone with their own messages.
Despite stepping down from Ghana’s highest office, Akufo-Addo has maintained a high-profile presence, particularly on the international stage.
Within a year of leaving office, he has taken on three major election observation assignments, underscoring his continued relevance in democratic governance.
Most recently, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) appointed him to lead its Election Observation Mission for the presidential election in Benin, scheduled for April 12, 2026.
The mission will run from April 7 to 15 under ECOWAS’s Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.
Earlier in February, Akufo-Addo led a Commonwealth Observer Group to monitor parliamentary elections and a national referendum in Bangladesh. In March, he was also selected by the African Union to head its observer mission for elections in the Republic of the Congo.
These successive appointments highlight growing international confidence in his leadership and experience.
They also signal a transition from national politics to a broader role in promoting electoral integrity and democratic stability across the continent and beyond.
As he marks his 82nd birthday, Akufo-Addo’s continued involvement in global democratic processes reflects a post-presidential path defined by diplomacy, governance, and sustained public service.
