National Chairman race: Inusah Fuseini backs Oppong-Fosu

Former Roads and Highways Minister Inusah Fuseini has endorsed Akwasi Oppong-Fosu for NDC National Chairman, describing grassroots unity and integrity as essential to the party’s future.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, the former Tamale Central Member of Parliament said the NDC’s strength lies in its grassroots and urged the party to embrace leadership that reflects its founding values.

He argued that renewing the party and restoring confidence would require a collective effort before ending his message with the declaration: “Akwasi Opong-Fosu for National Chairman.”

Fuseini’s endorsement comes as interest grows in the race to lead the governing National Democratic Congress ahead of its next internal elections.

Oppong-Fosu, a former Member of Parliament for Amenfi East, has been consulting party stakeholders in recent weeks as part of a campaign centred on what he describes as a “reset agenda.”

His campaign has focused on rebuilding party structures, strengthening unity and preparing the NDC for future electoral contests.

A former Head of the Local Government Service, Oppong-Fosu also served as District Chief Executive for 18 years, making him the longest-serving DCE in Ghana’s history.

He later held ministerial positions in three different portfolios, including Local Government and Environment.

His campaign has continued to gather momentum, with Fuseini becoming one of the latest senior party figures to publicly throw his support behind the former minister.

The endorsement follows recent comments by Oppong-Fosu that the NDC’s National Chairmanship contest should not be reduced to a battle of personalities.

As speculation over potential contenders intensified, he argued that the party needed strong and enduring internal systems rather than structures dependent on individuals.

Oppong-Fosu, who currently serves as Board Chairman of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), has maintained that institutional reforms are necessary to strengthen the party and secure its long-term future.

He has also emerged as an early favourite in an online poll conducted by Today.com.gh, ahead of other names linked to the race, including former Member of Parliament Nii Lante Vanderpuye and former National Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo.

Fuseini remains an influential figure within the NDC, having recently served on the party’s Ayawaso East Investigative Committee that examined allegations of vote-buying during the constituency’s parliamentary primary.
